What Is Pension Credit — And Could You Be Missing Out?

Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit that tops up the income of pensioners on a low income. It’s one of the most valuable "gateway" benefits in the whole system — because being awarded Pension Credit can open the door to a string of other help you might not otherwise get.

Why people wrongly assume they don’t qualify

The most common reason people never apply is assuming a small workplace or private pension, some modest savings, or owning their own home automatically rules them out. In many cases it doesn’t. The calculation looks at your actual weekly income against a guarantee level set each year — and even a partial award is worth applying for, because of everything it can unlock.

What Pension Credit can unlock

  • Council Tax Reduction — many local councils reduce or waive Council Tax entirely for Pension Credit recipients.
  • A free TV licence if you’re 75 or over.
  • Help with NHS costs, including dental treatment, glasses and transport to hospital appointments.
  • Cheaper broadband and phone social tariffs from many providers.
  • In some cases, help with home heating costs including the Warm Home Discount.

This is exactly why we check Pension Credit eligibility for every Attendance Allowance client, automatically, at no extra cost. Being awarded Attendance Allowance can itself increase how much Pension Credit you’re entitled to, because it changes the income calculation in your favour — so the two benefits work together, not separately.

How to find out if you qualify

The quickest way to get a genuine indication is to run through a few simple questions about your income, savings and household — you don’t need paperwork to hand to get a first read on whether it’s worth pursuing properly.
